A grant for "Museum Adventure Pass, presented by
Macy's," an innovative program in Minneapolis/St. Paul
and Detroit, partnering Macy's with local public libraries
and arts and cultural organizations to provide free
admission to the museums for the community. Library
cardholders simply visit their local library, present their
library card and check out a Museum Adventure Pass,
which provides free admission for two or four people per
organization. The program launched in September 2006
in Minneapolis, and at year-end 2007, a total of 164,000
passes had been checked out for the 17 participating
organizations. The Detroit program began in October
2007 and more than 20,000 people participated by yearend
- visiting more than 25 participating organizations.
Support of the Arts and Crafts program at Children's
Fairyland (CFL) in Oakland, CA. CFL offers an innovative
program for children to create, imagine, play and learn,
and it is the oldest storybook theme park in America.
The Arts and Crafts program offers an activity each
weekend that stimulates a child's imagination, creativity,
and desire to learn - such as puppet making, origami,
building Chinese lanterns, creating carnival masks
that celebrate the festivities of the season, and holiday
season cookie decoration and card design.
Sponsorship of the exhibition "I Have A Dream:
The Morehouse College Martin Luther King Jr.
Collection." The exhibit featured papers, writings
and speeches of the civil rights leader, including
his Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech, sermons,
books from his library with notes jotted in the
margins, and index cards with thoughts and quotes to
which he referred for inspiration.
A grant for the "Stand Strong: Character Building for
Young People" program in Boston. The program uses
sports to engage kids in a curriculum that helps them
build the type of character they need to withstand
drugs, violence and other challenges facing today's
youth. The students participate in a series of 13 learning
modules involving museum activities, school sessions,
field trips and a guided community service project -
all targeted at specific elements of character such as
teamwork, courage, determination and fairness.
A grant to support Bryan's House, a comprehensive
pediatric AIDS child center in Dallas providing on-site
nursing care 24 hours a day, seven days per week.
The organization's mission is to respond to the needs
of children and their families by providing care,
support services, nursing services, a school-aged care
program, case management and social services such
as support groups, nutrition and food assistance and
transportation.
